Why Modal isn't Eco Friendly

Like me, you've probably seen tons of new clothing coming out using modal sometimes labeled as modal cotton.

 What is modal?

Modal is basically a generic name for a semi-synthetic rayon. Made-By gave it a class D ranking in terms of sustainability (A being the best and E being the worst).

Most modal is made from beech tree's which require less water to grow and process compared to conventionally grown cotton.

However, the chemical process that goes into creating the fabrics are not Eco-friendly and have been known to irritate skin.

If your modal isn't made by the company named Lenzing, it most likely comes from the rain-forests that have been cleared to allow for plantations to come and grow timber. This is why we have opted out of using modal.
