What is World Hijab Day?
February 1st, 2013 marked the first annual World Hijab Day founded by Nazma Khan. It is now celebrated and recognized world wide every year on the 1st of February.
She came up with this idea to spread awareness and understanding for the hijab by inviting non-Hijabi Muslims and non Muslims to experience wearing the hijab for a day.
Through starting this movement Nazma has opened up a path to counteract the false rumors spread about why women wear the hijab. Growing up in the West, myself and many other hijabis have faced some sort of harassment and discrimination because of our choice to wear the hijab. I personally love the message that World Hijab Day conveys and the attention it brings to the subject of hijab. I hope that organizations and movements like this will continue to gain traction and spread the truth.
